For now, I'm avoiding anything variant until everyone gets a feel for the game.

I got notice of a pre-order for the April release of the Keep on Shadowfell adventure, which means they're actually putting the adventure out two months before the rulebooks. Bold move. I'm just happy to get my hands on it.

I was going to suggest they make a race that resembles me, then I remembered they dropped the paunchy bald guy with no combat skills (gnomes).Gary Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11897166491600280320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7150649422744296369.post-40797614337590582442008-01-29T19:47:00.000-08:002008-01-29T19:47:00.000-08:00I finally got to read some of the Races and Classe...I finally got to read some of the Races and Classes book, and you are definitely not the target audience of the Dragonborn:

Powerful loners with a strong sense of honor who are raised by a single parent. Just in case this wasn't enough to appeal to the average geeky teen male they made one of the racial weapons a katana :-PFulminatahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14332824290977548527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7150649422744296369.post-62299114150404523672008-01-29T14:51:00.000-08:002008-01-29T14:51:00.000-08:00As for the RPGA, it looks like Origins 2008 will s...As for the RPGA, it looks like Origins 2008 will see the 4E premier of Living Realms.

We don't do RPGA in the store, mostly because nobody has stepped up to run it, but I found the info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_RealmsGary Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11897166491600280320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7150649422744296369.post-12535346568865231622008-01-29T08:54:00.000-08:002008-01-29T08:54:00.000-08:00Gary, thanks for the cogent review. It's funny, I s...Gary, thanks for the cogent review.
It's funny, I saw the book at my FLGS, and looked through it, and *really* liked what I saw.

I have been pretty anti-D&D as a game for a long time (since the early 90's). Always was a GURPS and Traveller fan. Which is funny, since I am not a rules-fan or rules lawyer, which both of those games can tend to appeal to.

Of course as a store owner, I loved D&D, but personally, it didn't do much for me. I had nostalgia for Greyhawk, having cut my teeth on 1st edition back in the 70s. But the game itself, and the settings, and the rules, and my own ornery dislike of whatever tends to be popular had me being against D&D.

But the new book a) caught my eye with some very pretty pictures; and then b) while I browsed it, I really like the setting concepts, and the discarding of the alignment wheel, which I always thought was so arbitrary anyway.

Anyway, to make a short story long; I was just e-mailing to my game buddies with whom I played GURPS with back in the late 90's to suggest maybe we might want to play D&D 4E. I couldn't remember the name of the book, but remembered your review of the Class/Race book, so I figured I could find the full name of the book. Lo and behold, your review of this product. Perfect, and timely!

So, now my guess is most of my old RPG group has read your review too. And it was a good one. Thanks.

A question we had, perhaps you know since I am no longer so dialed in: When will the RPGA switch over to 4th ed?librarianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00910979028549627470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7150649422744296369.post-55632232223136398412008-01-28T21:06:00.000-08:002008-01-28T21:06:00.000-08:00Yes, the miniatures combat is here to stay. There's always talk that their miniatures make more money than their books and perhaps they drive the process more than we know.Gary Rayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11897166491600280320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7150649422744296369.post-50867721094252990292008-01-28T20:54:00.000-08:002008-01-28T20:54:00.000-08:00Overall, I like what you've outlined here, but you...Overall, I like what you've outlined here, but you briefly mentioned what is still my single biggest issue with both 3rd and 4th editions: the tie to tactical miniatures combat. Of all the things that I want to be optional, that's #1. I've played in some great games using miniatures, but as a DM I never used them. I prefer using a more narrative approach.

So for me, this is like a toolkit where I can use any combination of tools I want, as long as one of them is always a sledgehammer :-PFulminatahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14332824290977548527noreply@blogger.com
