I can't claim to be surprised, really. People want predictability and control, and they want something they can't get elsewhere. Really, all that's needed for liar's dice is dice, which most people have in abundance. Go is more controllable than backgammon. And people can't afford the randomised collectible minis in this economy. It's not a time when you can buy a box hoping it'll contain what you wanted...
