The View

Our customer loyalty software has been down for a couple weeks now. After consulting with the programmers and our POS consultants, it looks like a Microsoft Windows Vista update has prevented the program from accessing the registry. The programmer is working on it, but the advice from my IT guys is to go back to Windows XP, since that's what everyone is familiar with. When I upgraded to this new computer, I verified that Microsoft Retail Dynamics and the new loyalty software was compatible. Unfortunately, so few retailers are using Vista, supporting these programs on that platform is very difficult. So now we wait for the programmer to come up with a solution.

  1. I absolutely love it when Microsoft updates a version of windows and makes it incompatible with other software that is designed to work with that version of windows.

Windows XP service pack 2 acted as a virus towards several of my programs - including my Wireless Modem!

  2. Microsoft feels that they can get away with this crap, due to their monopoly position.

I say that you should be able to sue Microsoft for damages, lost time, etc. - Just as if they had created and purposely sent a malicious virus to your computer.

  3. Ah, regression testing. It would be lovely if they did any, wouldn't it?

  4. Did you try and turn of UAC? Or run the loyalty program with admin rights? (Right click, run as admin?)

  5. I hadn't tried those things. I tried and it doesn't fix the problem though. Thanks!
