Black Reach

It's not often we get to build power displays. Game stores just don't sell that many new releases in high quantities, which is why we're specialty stores and don't have to worry too much about the Wal-Mart's of the world. Today I got in our Assault on Black Reach order, the new 40K starter set. The thing with this set is that it's got about $300 worth of models for $60, it's a great starter set, but and this is a big but, veteran players can also build really cheap armies from this box. One customer is buying five boxes to instantly field an Apocalypse 40K Ork army.

EDIT: Just a note that we're sticking to the Saturday street date on these, with a Friday at Midnight release.

That word "instantly"... I don't think it means what you think it means...

*thinks about assembling and painting that many orks*

  2. I'm looking forward to the release. I was hoping to get in to the Fantasy side of things as it's more of a chess match (good and bad things about that), but it seems like 40k is the most popular. Luckily for me, since I want to play Orks this box is a win win for me. Now, I just need to figure out what else I need.

  3. Btw, the display looks awesome! Not everyday we get to see that in the store.

  4. You'll find that most veteran players who build an army out of the box set would not have played that army otherwise.

The ork codex came out a few months ago and usually you see everyone playing the army that was just released, but this time we didn't. The reason being most people don't want to paint, assemble, and more than anything pay for that many orks. Now you'll have a lot of people thinking, "Well, why not?" And you'll not only sell a lot of Black Reach boxes, but also other ork units that they can not get from the box.

  8. No idea. For the 40K 5th Edition launch, we had games going on all night. This is much more low-key, with the store open until midnight to sell them and no special events tonight.

  9. How many have you sold already?

  10. We've gone through half the stack and it's only 4:30pm. My guess is the rest will last the first week.
